Time Names 'The Silence Breakers' Of #MeToo Movement Person Of The Year

In an year, which has seen incredible number of women and also men coming out and narrating incidents of sexual harassment in work places leading to high profile exits, the TIME magazine has given the 2017 Person of the Year to the "The Silence Breakers".

Harvey Weinstein, whose scandal jump-started 2017's months of reckoning over sexual harassment, looms large over the Time list, with Judd, one of the more than 80 women who have accused him of assault and sexual harassment, featured in the story.

It was the 91 {+s} t year that the magazine has recognized the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year.

Editors say the "silence breakers" were chosen for giving voice to open secrets and for pushing us all to stop accepting the unacceptable.

The cover depicts a sharp gray backdrop, and activist Adama Iwu, actress Ashley Judd, singer Taylor Swift, strawberry picker Isabel Pascual and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler are photographed against it in black, looking determined to stand their ground after coming out with gruesome tales of how they were sexually harassed by senior people in their industry when they were first starting out.

The shortlist of candidates for TIME's Person of the Year was revealed on the Today Show on Monday. "Today" host Savannah Guthrie acknowledged Wednesday that this year's victor hits "close to home" and mentioned Lauer by name.

The article also highlights Tarana Burke, who founded the #MeToo movement more than 10 years ago to highlight the stories of underprivileged people of color affected by sexual abuse.

"What a difference a year can make", she said when she heard the news during an interview on CNN Wednesday morning, referencing the way accusations against Trump were handled last year leading up to the election compared to now. It's not just a moment, it's a movement.

President Donald Trump was runner-up this year, but in 2016 he won the accolade for the "revolution" he stirred in the US. "It's vital to me that we really set in some actionable things that we can do to continue this momentum".

"The women and men who have broken their silence span all races, all income classes, all occupations and virtually all corners of the globe", Time wrote. Trump added that he "took a pass".

This year's short list was dominated by men, including Chinese president Xi Jinping, special prosecutor Robert Mueller, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and National Football League player Colin Kaepernick. Time called that account false.
