London honours the 14 women killed at Ecole Polytechnique

Almost 100 people crowded into a third floor room at My Sisters' Place on Wednesday, the 28th anniversary of the day 14 women were gunned down by a man at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique. Fourteen young women, almost all of them in their early twenties, shot dead by a gunman who blamed successful women for his own unhappy life.

Stephanie McLean, Alberta's minister of status of women, issues a statement on what is now known as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

"I was in the women's studies program at Concordia University at the time", said Carvalho, "For me every year when that time comes around I remember that happened, and [violence] still happens". The date also falls within the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign which begins on November 25 with the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until December 10 with Human Rights Day.

A collection of shoes, each labelled with the name of a missing or murdered woman, will be on display at St. Andrews on the Square on Wednesday - "putting a name to those who can no longer speak for themselves".

"Equipping students with values and an understanding of societal impacts and the ethics of what they do I think will make them stronger graduates who will have a greater impact, not just technically but in the larger landscape of things", she says. All were victims of alleged domestic or gender based violence in Ontario this year.

Police enter the École Polytechnique after a lone gunman opened fire at the school in Montreal on December 6, 1989.

Violence against women - particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence - is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.

"Even though it happened in Montreal 28 years ago, it's something that's still very much happening in society today", said Kendra Strong-Garcia from the YWCA. "Together we have a responsibility to foster a culture of respect and inclusion".

"Hearing about the awful tragedy that happened here was a real eye-opener for me, recognizing that even relatively recently there was a lot of violence towards women who wanted to pursue male-dominated fields", she said after the ceremony.
