John Oliver confronts Dustin Hoffman over sexual harassment in testy exchange

Oliver, surprisingly, pushed back against Hoffman to the mixed response of the crowd.

Hoffman talked about how he starred in the 1982 movie "Tootsie".

Could entertainers now become journalists?

Later in the conversation, Oliver read a quote about Hoffman that Hunter said she wrote in 1985: "No one is 100 percent good or bad".

The event between Oliver and Hoffman had begun unremarkably. The two were part of a program celebrating the anniversary of the film Wag the Dog in NY. Hoffman said, looking at Levinson for validation. Predictable moments would surely follow - amusing anecdotes from the set; genial platitudes about its relevance to the modern political era. I left, speechless. Then I went to the bathroom and cried'.

But Oliver had another idea. 'Why the f- didn't I say something? "The easy way is not to bring anything up". "That leads to me at home later tonight hating myself, asking, 'Why the fuck didn't I say something? So, it feels like a cop-out to say, 'Well, this isn't me.' Do you understand how that feels like a dismissal?"

"I can't leave certain things unaddressed", Oliver later said.

DH: Do you believe this stuff that you're reading? "He's not exactly Mike Wallace, you know?"

"I'm not the moral arbiter of anything", Oliver said before quoting Hoffman's apology. "[The film] wasn't produced by Weinstein or Miramax", she said.

Even among boldface interviewers, Oliver remains an exception. Maybe I shouldn't have said things.

"John Oliver isn't beholden to numerous things that other late-night hosts have to deal with", Madison III said in an interview. "But a lot of people can't do that".

Oliver called that a cop out and he wasn't any more patient about Hoffman's questioning why it took a woman 40 years to come forward.

Monday night's discussion didn't address other claims made about Hoffman, especially recently.

"I don't love that response either", Oliver said.

DH: What response do you want? It was the most strident confrontation by a late night talk show host, several of whom, including Jimmy Fallon, have been accused of staying away from wading into the issues of sexual misconduct in Hollywood brought on by a wave of accusations against powerful men.

"Well, I'm trying harder than you are", Hoffman said. In the 1997 film, a political spin doctor (played by De Niro) hires a Hollywood producer (Hoffman) to stage a fake war in Albania to distract the American public following a presidential sex scandal.

Hoffman was at that time married to wife Lisa Hoffman (née Gottsegen), they married in 1980 and they are still together. It doesn't feel self reflective in the way that it seems the incident demands. I think he's probably the smartest and funniest political commentator now on television. But men losing their jobs makes other men scared. "They didn't find me attractive and they just erased me". "And that is "if" I did anything that was out of sorts, or if I embarrassed her, I apologize".
