IPL 2018 Auctions: Retention Policy explained

The Governing Council meeting was attended by the members of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).

In a very delighting news for the Chennai Super Kings fans, their favorite cricketer MS Dhoni is likely to lead the CSK franchise in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions will not feature in the 11th edition of the tournament. From INR 66 crore in the last two auctions (2016 and 2017), the salary cap will be INR 80 crore in 2018. The IPL Governing Council had allowed a maximum of either three retentions or three Right To Match (RTM) at the discretion of the franchises. 3 Maximum number of 2 Uncapped Indian players. A franchise can secure a maximum of two uncapped Indian players. If a franchise does not retain any player before the auction it can still retain only three using right-to-match cards. For example, if CSK chooses not to retain Dhoni directly and he is placed on auction instead, CSK will have the right to match the highest bid for him and retain him that way. Mumbai Indians will retain Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, and the Pandya brothers (Hardik and Krunal) and also Royal Challengers Bangalore retains Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle but Shane Watson is not confirmed. For 2019 and 2020, the cap will be increased to Rs 82 and Rs 85 crore respectively. If only one player is retained, then he will cost the franchise INR 12.5 crore from the salary cap. The IPL said the franchises will need to spend at least 75% of the salary cap each season, and that each squad should contain between 18 and 25 players with a limit of eight overseas players per franchise.

For the auctions, the base price of players have been increased in both capped and uncapped categories.

In July 2017, The Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Friday that Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals would be back for 2018 IPL.
