Boom's supersonic jets get $10 million boost from Japan Airlines

Boom's supersonic jets get $10 million boost from Japan Airlines

Boom Supersonic's hangar is located at Centennia Airport in Colorado.

Boom is planning to build a 45-to-55 seat aircraft that cruises at Mach 2.2 (2335kmh) - capable of whisking passengers between NY and London in about three hours.

Japan Airlines (JAL) was founded in 1951 and became the first worldwide airline in Japan. In addition, it is designing the aircraft to keep costs down so airlines can charge fares comparable to business class. Round-trip fares on the Concorde between NY and London generally were more than $10,000, according to the BBC, while Boom lists its projected costs as $2,500 per leg for the same journey. Under the agreement, JAL is collaborating with Boom to refine aircraft design and to "help define the passenger experience for supersonic travel", the companies said.

The US firm says seats from London to NY will cost $5,000 return.

In terms of progress on making its supersonic jet a reality, Boom is in the process of selecting a production site for its aircraft, and hopes to have its commercial jet in service by 2023.

There are also options for 46 more aircraft from unidentified customers.

"JAL's passionate, visionary team offers decades of practical knowledge and wisdom on everything from the passenger experience to technical operations", Scholl said.

Boom founder and chief executive Blake Scholl said the strategic partnership with Japan Airlines came after a year working together behind the scenes. We're thrilled to be working with JAL to develop a reliable, easily maintained aircraft that will provide revolutionary speed to passengers.

Boom reportedly has 76 preorders, not including the option of 20 aircraft from Japan Airlines, for its plane that would travel at Mach 2.2, over two times the speed of sound and faster than the Concorde, which maxed out at around Mach 2.

The Boom passenger plane will hold 55 passengers, with a mini version of the jet - called Boom XB-1 - set for its debut test flight by the end of 2018. Having airline stakeholders closely involved in the development of its aircraft and service plans will work in practice is a huge boon for Boom, which is a very small company with very ambitious goals.

The Asian flag-carrier has ploughed $10m (£7.5m) into a scheme led by U.S. firm Boom Supersonic.
