Messi statue vandalized 2nd time

Messi statue vandalized 2nd time

Lionel Messi's statue in Buenos Aires has been targeted for the second time in 15 months after vandals knocked the entire artwork off its podium.

Manchester City offered Messi a €100m signing on fee, if he arrived on a free transfer in the summer, and a salary of €50m per year after tax, claim Marca.

The statue is on the Promenade de Glorias, alongside monuments to other Argentinian sporting heros including National Basketball Association veteran Manu Ginobili, tennis star Guillermo Vilas and Formula One great Juan Manuel Fangio. As with the first incident, authorities have yet to identify any suspects.

Despite the statue being fixed soon after, however, the Daily Mail has now reported that looters have once again taken tools to the effigy - only this time they left the statue near its base after cutting it at ankle level.

In January, Messi's statue was discovered without its top half, as vandals apparently made off with its torso, arms and head.

In 2016, Gabriela Sabatini's tennis racket was stolen.

The 30-year-old Messi is his country's all-time leading scorer with 61 goals in 123 appearances and it was his hat-trick against Ecuador in Argentina's 3-1 win in their final qualifier on October 10 that secured the nation their place at the 2018 World Cup.

Despite his enormous success at the individual and club level, including five Federation Internationale de Football Association player of the year awards and four Champions League titles with Barcelona, Messi is not universally adored in his home country.
