Trump Working Overtime to Block Romney from the Senate

"Hatch is a known entity for Trump and has been really good for the president for the most part", Kirk Jowers, former chairman and general counsel for Romney's political action committee, told Politico. "I don't know that he knows what he's going to get with Romney, but it's not going to be what he's got with Hatch", Jowers said.

"Over the past year the President has encouraged Senator Hatch to consider running for re-election a number of times, because of his leadership position and ability to advance their shared Republican agenda", Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said in a statement to ABC News.

On Monday, Hatch said Trump called him into the Oval Office on his fifth day in office and asked how he could help Utah.

Well, Romney can hardly be furious. But Donald Trump does not want him to retire because of the person who would most likely replace him: Mitt Romney. It also relates to the tangible sense of loyalty Trump holds for Hatch, with the latter standing by him despite the Utah Republican delegation's withdrawal of support following "Access Hollywood" tape episode late in the 2016 campaign.

"We like Sen. Hatch", the source said. But when the press followed up with a question about whether Trump's enthusiasm for Hatch was meant to deter Romney, he demurred, replying, "He's a good man. Mitt's a good man".

But as we were reminded when Trump attacked Hilary Clinton again Monday morning over her treatment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there are some political rivalries President Trump just can't seem to get over.

Trump is publicly egging on Hatch to run.

It hearkens all the way back to the early stages of Trump's electoral campaign, with disparaging remarks being flung in both directions.

"We hope you will continue to serve your state and your country in the Senate for a long time to come", Trump said in the state Capitol, calling Hatch a "fighter", a high compliment from the president. However, he's also criticized Trump enough to get under his skin; Romney called on Trump to stay in the Paris climate agreement, blasted his response to the violence in Charlottesville, and undermined Trump's response to the Roy Moore scandal. The former MA governor's criticisms sparked rumors that he and a handful of never-Trumpers would seek to oust Trump at the Republican National Convention.

At another event, Trump mouthed "yes" when asked whether he wanted Hatch to run again in 2018 while pushing a shopping cart through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Welfare Square as he purported to look for tuna.

The moral of the story: Trump may be maneuvering against Romney; but, in truth, Hatch is vulnerable to just about any Republican primary challenger. The victor by far: Mitt Romney.

"If Steve had a choice between Orrin Hatch and Mitt Romney, he would pick Hatch 10 times out of 10", a source close to Bannon told the Examiner.
