Code.org Raises $12 Million from Bill Gates and Other Backers

The Code.org nonprofit trains teachers on how to teach computer science lessons to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Founded in 2012, Code.org is perhaps best known for its Hour of Code campaign, events held around the world that give students a one hour introduction to computer science and coding. In fifth grade, the students even write part of the code. Code.org, which has raised more than $60 million from Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and Salesforce, was one of the first companies to tap into the demand for preteen programming literacy.

"Computer science plays a significant role in revolutionizing business & industry, creating new fields of commerce, and driving technological breakthroughs across all fields of science", said Governor Ducey before his arrival to the event. "Right now most schools in California don't offer any computer science classes and sadly, that disparity is punctuated by striking gender and racial gaps", Lt. Governor Newsom said.

The announcement came as part of a Computer Science Education Week kickoff event in San Mateo. Computer science can help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.

McCarthy said she hopes her students feel prepared when they enter high school and take other science related courses. Mark Muro, one of the study's authors, told VentureBeat that in addition to teaching coding skills, states should consider how they can prepare their future workforce for a wold in which they'll be expected to have fluency in a range of office software programs, from Microsoft Office to Slack. "I'm thrilled to announce the launch of CSforCA to make sure every California student has access to high-quality computer science education".

Governor Doug Ducey visited the Phoenix Coding Academy on Monday to kick off Computer Science Education Week.
