49ers report card: Garoppolo looks like a natural

Placekicker Robbie Gould made all five of FG attempts, although none was longer than 35 yards-which emphasizes how close the 49ers were to blowing out the Bears here.

With the 49ers trailing 14-12, Garoppolo led his team down to the Bears' 3-yard-line with 1:34 left in the game.

The former Patriot gave his team a 3-0 lead behind a 60-yard, game-opening drive, but ran into trouble on his second possession as a tipped ball over the middle led to the first interception of his professional career. If that isn't justice, I don't know what is. Cohen followed with an electrifying punt-return touchdown in the second quarter as he retreated 15 yards before reversing direction and finding daylight along the left sideline. He didn't get a chance to lead a final drive.

The drawback, of course, is not having Long on the line makes life that much more hard for developing quarterback Mitch Trubisky and running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. He finished with a career-high six catches (on six targets) for 92 yards.

All told, the Bears 147 total yards and one offensive touchdown.

Garoppolo struggled to find the end zone against a solid Chicago passing defense.

Robbie Gould Clowned The Bears

Garoppolo hit several critical throws in his 49ers starting debut.

In his first start for a one-win Niners team that acquired him via trade from New England for a 2018 second-round draft pick 33 days ago, Garoppolo completed 26-of-37 for 293 yards with one interception and a passer rating of 82.4. In general, the Bears never seemed to bother him. Do the Bears have that little trust in their coverage units? "Again, I don't want to say yes, I don't want to say no at this point". Outside of a few good Kyle Fuller plays, the defensive backs didn't do much of anything.

And of course, the Bears would waste some of Tarik Cohen's best plays of the season, including this incredible punt return. For example, just before the half, the 49ers were inside the 10 and then moved right out when tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin had back-to-back false start penalties.

But the Niners had one of their best performances on third down all season, converting 10-of-18 for 56 percent, the second-best percentage they've had on third down this season. And, naturally, they got exactly what they deserved: a loss.

Garoppolo grew up 30 miles away from Soldier Field, wore Bears jerseys during impromptu backyard games and like every sports-crazed Chicago kid imagined himself one day playing there. "We were in NY a year ago, he didn't speak to me, I didn't see him today. You don't know if it's going to come true or not but it's insane how things work out".

With the Bears retreating against the speedster, Garoppolo took advantage for short completions ahead of the Chicago defense.
