Apple releases fix to safety flaw in Mac working system

"The Mac OS High Sierra "root" user bug is insane. just tried it for myself & can not believe it actually worked", tweeted programmer William LeGate. "And worse, two of those Mac users say they've also tried re-installing Apple's security patch after that upgrade, only to find that the "root" problem still persists until they reboot their computer, with no warning that a reboot is necessary". Ergin said staff members reported the vulnerability to Apple on November 23, and he disclosed the flaw publicly in a tweet on Tuesday.

As we reported on Wednesday, developer Lemi Ergin discovered a massive security vulnerability in macOS High Sierra that would allow anyone with direct physical (or remote access) to a Mac to bypass administrator authentication and login without even supplying a password.

MacOS High Sierra has discovered a vulnerability that allows anyone to get extended run as the root user.

Apple has yet to comment on this newfound issue.

It is noted that remotely realize the vulnerability impossible - the attacker must still have direct access to your device. The documentation been updated with the reboot step now. Users who had not installed macOS 10.13.1 and thus were running a prior version of the OS when they received the security update, found that installing 10.13.1 resurfaced the bug, according to a report from Wired.

Tests of the flaw indicated that it could be used to alter a user's system settings that normally require a chosen username and password. To enable the Root User and set a password, please follow the instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204012.

You'd think that would be the end of Apple's software troubles for this week, but you'd be wrong.

You may enter the root user with a blank password and click the login button several times, writes MacRumors. The fix is available for download in the App Store and later in the day will be automatically installed on all systems running the latest version (10.13.1) of macOS High Sierra. When that happens, "Make sure to update your Macs and MacBooks at your earliest opportunity after it is released", he added.
