All Apple Watch owners can now track their heart health

STANFORD MEDICINE researchers are working with Apple on a research study to determine whether the Apple Watch's heart-rate sensor can identify irregular heart rhythms associated with a condition known as atrial fibrillation. You must be 22 years or older to participate.

"This study is the first to bring connected care to clinical research, moving the cycle from the hospital to the home through a combination of wearables, analytics, telehealth and consumer devices", Ido Schoenberg, chairman and CEO of American Well, said in a statement emailed to FierceHealthcare. Second, it could also encourage patients to be more adherent to their therapy as they can see the outcome or need for treatment. Once they have signed up, the Watch and Heart Study app will work to detect any irregular heartbeats.

The study is open to USA participants 22 years of age or older.

Available for iPhone and Apple Watch users in the US the Apple Heart Study app represents part of a "first-of-its-kind" research project that seeks to establish the potential use of wearables such as Apple Watch in detecting atrial fibrillation (AFib) - a condition associated with an increased risk of strokes and heart failure.

With news coming that some insurance companies are giving Apple watches to their members to help improve wellness, this may be another avenue to encourage health insurers or other agencies to recommend the Apple Watch in an increasingly competitive wearable market. Participants will also get a free consultation with a study doctor and an ECG patch for additional monitoring.

The heart rate sensor in the Apple Watch is created to catch problems like irregular heartbeats which don't always cause symptoms. When Apple and Stanford are ready to include you in the study you'll get a notification on your iPhone and Apple Watch. The company declined to say whether it would take on further research in the future.

With this new app, your Apple Watch might save your life. The SEARCH-AF study. Thromb Haemost.

At least 33 million units of the Watch have been sold, according to Asymco analyst Horace Deidu - Apple itself does not officially release sales figures, nor information on who is buying the Watch. Then, they often must visit them in person to collect data. Now go to the Identify your Apple Watch web page and match your model number to the list. In September Williams said that Apple worked closely with the FDA in developing the study.
