Britain offers help for Zimbabwe after Mugabe 'oppression'

South Africa is a unsafe country for President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace, to seek refuge as some of its citizens and worldwide human rights activists will hound the couple for crimes they committed there and in Zimbabwe, a top academic has said.

Mugabe's resignation followed an impeachment motion adopted by Zimbabwe's parliament on Tuesday.

However, another academic, Dr. John Akokpari from the University of Cape Town, said South Africa should seriously consider giving Mugabe asylum as the country was Zimbabwe's biggest trading partner in the region.

"As Zimbabwe's oldest friend we will do all we can to support this, working with our worldwide and regional partners to help the country achieve the brighter future it so deserves".

The report quoted a government source as saying that Mugabe told negotiators that he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and that he had no intentions to live in exile. Presidents of Angola and South Africa cancelled a trip to Harare after Mugabe agreed to step down following pressure from the army, his party and ordinary Zimbabweans who flooded the streets.

Zimbabwe is due to hold national elections no later than September 2018.

"During 37 years of President Mugabe's leadership, tens of thousands of people were tortured, forcibly disappeared or killed".

Johnson says he hopes Mugabe's resignation will be a turning point and that there should now be "free and fair democratic elections and above all not a transition from one despotic rule to another".

The Foreign Secretary said it was now a matter for Zimbabweans to decide what happens to Mr Mugabe and his wife Grace.

"With the resignation of Robert Mugabe, today marks an historic moment for Zimbabwe".
