NASA tool shows how rising sea levels will affect coastal cities

By exhaustively mapping these fingerprint gradients, we form a new diagnosis tool, henceforth referred to as gradient fingerprint mapping (GFM), that readily allows for improved assessments of future coastal inundation or emergence.

Coastal cities around the world are at risk of severe flooding and even eventual eradication as ocean levels rise.

Sea level rise is one of the most recognizable consequences of climate change and is likely to be one of the most destructive as well. As most of the earth's freshwater is stored in glaciers and ice sheets, their melting owing to global warming is a major factor in rising sea level. Sea level will rise by 0.51-1.31 m by the end of the century.

The GFM has now been applied to 293 major port cities to allow coastal planners to readily calculate local seal level (LSL) change.

City planning and development departments will now be able to prepare for rising sea levels with the help of a new simulation tool by Nasa. The online tool can be a bit technical to use and understand.

"This study allows one person to understand which icy areas of the world will contribute most significantly to sea level change [rise or decrease] in their specific city", Eric Larour, the project lead for NASA JPL's Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM) and lead author of the study, told CNN.

Scientists Can Now Tell How Much Glaciers Melting Will Affect Specific Cities

For example, the tool shows that the impact of Greenland melting will pose challenges for major metropolises like NY and London. It is believed that Mumbai and NY are the most vulnerable, however, the new finding has put forward an alternative theory.

This implies, however the frosty nation is more than 3,000 miles from NY, water from Greenland will influence NY more than other beach front urban areas that it's nearer to including Boston, Mass., St John's, Newfoundland and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The study found that because of gravity, the biggest contributions to local sea level rise would come from glaciers and ice sheets farthest away from the cities.

"This means that locally, close to the ice change itself, sea level will decrease".

For this reason, cities like Halifax and Reykjavik, Iceland, may actually see sea levels decrease.

Similarly, the research showed that Sydney, Australia is most affected by the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet on the other side of the Antarctic continent from the eastern Australian city.
