New Polar Satellite System To Bring More Accurate Weather Forecasts

New Polar Satellite System To Bring More Accurate Weather Forecasts

JPSS is a collaborative program between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its acquisition agent, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Launch Configuration Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) measures the electromagnetic emissions and subjects it to expected electromagnetic radiation that the satellite would experience at the launch site. Sensors aboard the spacecraft will collect measurements of air, ocean, and ground conditions, as well as fire locations, temperatures and water vapor throughout the atmosphere.

JPSS-1 is planned to be placed into a non-geosynchronous polar orbit that will allow for a almost complete coverage of the entire Earth's surfaces twice in each 24-hour period with state-of-the-art instruments that are expected to aid meteorologists and other scientists and researchers to better predict severe weather phenomena such as hurricanes up to seven days ahead of the incident. The first stage of the Delta II rocket arrived at Vandenberg's NASA Hangar 836 on April 4, 2016.

Liftoff of the United Launch Alliance booster aimed for 1:47 a.m. from Space Launch Complex-2. "After it successfully clears the on-orbit test phase, NOAA-20 will become the nation's primary polar weather satellite and Suomi NPP will become its back up".

A scheduled early morning launch of a rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base was a no-go. It will be mounted atop the first stage of the rocket, seen on the left, as preparations continue for the launch of the Joint Polar Satellite System-1, or JPSS-1.

It remained unclear when another attempt would occur, but mission managers were tentatively planning to try again for liftoff at 1:47 a.m. Wednesday. "For the better part of a decade, scientists and policymakers have been very concerned about a gap in polar-orbiting satellite coverage of the Earth due to delays in launching JPSS-1 and the obvious aging or potential failure of older birds in orbit", according to Maue.

Assuming that JPSS-1 launches successfully on Tuesday and functions normally in orbit, the US will again have two working polar satellites at work at the same time.
