Mario Movie Reportedly Being Developed By Nintendo

Mario Movie Reportedly Being Developed By Nintendo

It appears that the two companies are moving closer to reaching an agreement that would bring Mario and friends to the movies in the near future.

One of the main requirements for Nintendo, according to the report, is a certain degree of creative control over its signature character, perhaps the most recognizable video game face of all time. Although WSJ doesn't specify what the film would be about, the current in-talks deal is only for one film.

Nintendo and Universal have an existing relationship that will see theme parks based on the video game giant's renowned properties opened in Universal Studios' locations in Japan, Florida and California. "This person" added that Shigeru Miyamoto has been part of the talks and will likely be a producer on the movie along with Mr. Meledandri. If Nintendo wanted a United States-based studio to make a Mario movie, there could be few better choices than Illumination Entertainment. Representatives of both companies refused to comment on the story.

The project is apparently in early development at Illumination's Paris studio Mac Guff, which is primarily responsible for the Despicable Me films. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo starred in the 1993 live-action movie, "Super Mario Bros", which was critically panned.

Nintendo is thriving this year, and with the release of the hugely successful "Super Mario Odyssey", Mario seems to be seeing a bit of resurgence.
