Hackers claim to have unlocked iPhone X's Face ID with a mask

That's what a Vietnamese security company claims it did - using only a $150 3D-printed mask.

The iPhone X is the first iPhone on the market with Face ID facial recognition technology. You can see it here.

Security researchers seem to have already beaten Apple's new Face ID security for its new, expensive iPhone X using an elaborate, 3D-printed mask.

Positioned under a sheet less than a metre away from the iPhone X, the mask successfully unlocked the phone as soon the material was removed.

Facial recognition is the next iteration of biometric identification. So, the device is going to "change and evolve" further in the coming months.

Bkav has been a long-term critic of facial recognition and alleges that Apple rushed out Face ID without properly securing it.

The fact that someone would need to be in the same room with you means this Face ID hack isn't much of a threat to most people.

It is understood that Bkav's experiments are not seen as a credible proof of concept, while security experts have suggested that Face ID was a feature created to be convenient rather than ultra secure. The company published a blog post and video showing a "proof of concept" on how they broke into an iPhone X using a simple technique. The team suggested that since since Apple released the iPhone X a year early, "they haven't carried out scientific and serious estimation before deciding to replace Touch ID with Face ID".

In a video released by the company Bkav, an employee unshrouds the mask, to which the phone apparently responds to by unlocking.

BKAV failed to walk viewers through its research process, and this is a glaring hole in its transparency. It's enabled by Apple's TrueDepth camera, projecting and analyzing over 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of your face.

Face ID allows a user to unlock their iPhone X, make purchases from various Apple digital stores and authenticate Apple Pay transactions to pay using stored payment card data.

Until then, there's no reason to stop using Face ID, unless you simply find it annoying to use.

Like the previous question, this one is important to note based on how Face ID's algorithm learns. So the only way to scans someone's face is to be in the same room, with their participation (either by choice or forced). It requires the knowledge of how Apple's Face ID and the neural network behind it works, according to the firm. However, the mask is now a proof-of-spoof and more research is required.

"They've even gone and worked with professional mask-makers and makeup artists in Hollywood to protect against these attempts to defeat Face ID".
