British parliament to get vote on final Brexit deal

British parliament to get vote on final Brexit deal

Mr Davis unveiled the plan for an Act of Parliament to write the terms of a future EU deal onto the statute book in a concession to rebel Tories threatening to wreck the separate EU Withdrawal Bill due to be debated this week.

Lawmakers from both main parties have been pushing for Parliament to have a greater say in the process, with some tabling amendments to government legislation that aim to prevent Britain tumbling out of the trading bloc without a deal.

Mr Davis said parliament would be able to scrutinise the deal "line by line".

"I can now confirm that once we have reached an agreement we will bring forward a specific piece of primary legislation to implement the agreement". David Davis has confirmed that Britain will continue with its plans to leave the European Union on March 29 2019, even if no deal has been reached and MPs vote against the new piece of legislation.

Brexit Secretary announces MPs will have the right to vote down any final Brexit deal.

Tory backbencher Heidi Allen branded Mr Davis's plan "pointless" as she also highlighted the Government's intention to alter legislation to state Britain's membership of the European Union will formally end at 11pm on 29 March, 2019.

"Clearly this is an attempt to see off amendments that go much further than David Davis on a "meaningful vote" - it is vital the EU Withdrawal Bill is amended to provide for a proper not a fake meaningful vote before any exit day".

Prime Minister Theresa May is now under pressure to offer a "meaningful vote" on any deal for Britain's departure from the European Union after months of unfruitful negotiations and Brexit talks.

Meanwhile, former Tory constitution minister John Penrose welcomed the Government's stronger pledge on a parliamentary vote, but expressed continuing concerns over the use of so-called "Henry VIII powers" as provided by the EU Withdrawal Bill.

MPs are set to continue with detailed discussions today on the EU Withdrawal Bill, drafted to scrap Britain's EU membership.

Brexit-supporting MPs, including Suella Fernandes, chair of the Tory's European Research Group, asked for assurance the bill would not be used to reverse Brexit.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Kier Starmer said that "This is a significant climb down from a weak Government on the verge of defeat".

What's more, there's no clarity on whether rejecting the bill would mean sending the government back to renegotiate or just result in the United Kingdom going for "no deal" and exiting on WTO terms. "This agreement will only hold if parliament approves it". "They have finally backed down", he said. However, like everything with this government the devil will be in the detail. "They need to accept Labour's amendments that would ensure transitional arrangements, and protect jobs and economy from a cliff-edge".
