Bill Gates donates £38 million to help fight Alzheimer's

Malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB have not been fully conquered, but with the most visible and energetic of the establishment philanthropists turning his sights to the disease of aging - Alzheimer's - we have forever reimagined the contours of global public health.

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates talks with a colleague before the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S. May 6, 2017.

Gates has called it a "huge" and "growing" problem, noting that "the scale of the tragedy-even for the people who stay alive-is very high". Current medications can only ease some of the symptoms, at best.

Mr Gates said the first treatments for the disease might not be feasible for a decade or more and would initially be expensive. While he acknowledged to Reuters that it will take "probably 10 years before new theories are tried enough times to give them a high chance of success", Gates told CNN that he believes there is a solution. Today more people survive cancer than die from it and with sufficient investment in dementia research we know the same tremendous progress will be possible for people and families affected by dementia too.

"I know how very bad it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity".

The investment comes personally from Gates, not through his charity organization, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Reuters reports.

Gates says he will follow the initial investment up with another $50 million for start-ups working in Alzheimer's research. People should be able to enjoy their later years-and we need a breakthrough in Alzheimer's to fulfill that.

He added that the Gates Foundation might consider how to expand access in poorer countries when treatments are developed. This would make it easier for researchers to look for patterns and identify new pathways for treatment, he said.
