Winner Of High School Golf Tournament Denied Trophy, Because She's A Girl

A teenage golfer from MA who came first in a regional tournament this week was denied a trophy and a chance to compete at state level because she's a girl, according to local media reports.

Emily Nash had the lowest score in the tournament, but the first place trophy went to a boy who was four strokes behind her.

Emily Nash, a junior at Lunenburg High School, won the Central Mass. Division 3 boys' golf tournament at Blissful Meadows on Tuesday with a 3-over-par.

That means Nash doesn't get a trophy - or a spot in the state championship.

But that unfair advantage is no longer an argument: Nash hit from the same tees as the guys. But as sports fans, if there's one thing we should all come together on, it's that the player who wins a tournament is actually declared the victor.

The rule states that girls playing on a fall boys' team can't be entered in the Boys' Fall Individual Tournament. They can only play in the boys team tournament.

Nash finished fourth in the state girls' tournament last spring as a sophomore.

In an interview with the Sentinel and Enterprise, Lunenburg High School golf coach Linda Collette confirmed they'd been made aware of the rule during the tournament.

"I was definitely disappointed, but I understand that there are rules in place", she told the paper.

Robert Durfesne, a volunteer official who ran the tournament, said, "It's a real injustice that she wasn't announced as the victor".

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported that Emily Nash was technically the victor of the tournament Tuesday, but runner-up Nico Ciolino was named the victor.

"You don't always have to win the actual title to get recognition for it", she said.

Lunenberg High School doesn't have a girls' golf team, WPBF reports. This rule should have been voided long ago because it penalizes achievement for no good reason, unless the reason is to discourage girls from playing in boys tournaments, which is not a good one.

Anything boys can do, girls can do better. The individual tournament opportunity for female golfers takes place during the spring season.

The MIAA Boys' Golf Tournament is held in the American autumn while the MIAA Girls' Golf Tournament is staged in the spring. Female golfers can only play individually during the girls' season. "She played the same tees, played under the same conditions and everything".
