Sessions Gives Sanctuary Cities a Final Warning

Sessions Gives Sanctuary Cities a Final Warning

The Department of Justice told five-out-of-the-10 jurisdictions allegedly defying federal immigration laws that they have until October 27 to submit evidence they are in compliance. The Department of Justice's letter to the city appears to suggest that its attorneys believe any restriction at all on local police inquiring about an immigrant's status by definition would violate federal law.

City and county officials did not immediately say how they would respond to the letters. "The NOPD will continue to focus on the arrest and conviction of violent criminals, regardless of their immigration status".

Wednesday federal authorities notified officials in Philadelphia and other cities that they are not in compliance with current immigration law.

The NOPD policy in question, which is governed by the city's federal consent decree, states that officers "shall not make inquiries into an individual's immigration status" except in certain circumstances.

"This is about making every member of this community feel safe because they have access to police, police services and they are willing and able to report crimes when they are either victims or witnesses to those crimes", Harrison said.

One condition requires the city to give federal agents, when requested, a 48-hour heads up of the scheduled release date and time "of an alien in the jurisdiction's custody".

Since the inauguration and throughout the year, the City of Chicago has been at odds with the Trump Administration.

The Justice Department has threatened to cut off federal dollars to New York City if it doesn't change its policies. "As we have maintained for years, the Department of Justice has confirmed that we are in full compliance with [the policy]", Landrieu said in a statement. "However we encourage all of Connecticut's law enforcement agencies not to participate" in joint operations with federal immigration agents, he wrote.

Landry, in a press release Thursday, declared himself "the state's most aggressive critic of sanctuary cities" and said he'd repeatedly warned Landrieu over the policies. "Mitch Landrieu is playing politics at the expense of New Orleans". Because Sessions is the best person to implement Trump's immigration policy, which was a lynchpin of his campaign. In the letter, the department did not specify what would happen if the city failed to do so. The assessment is its latest effort to force "sanctuary cities" to comply with federal immigration orders.

In addition, Philadelphia is suing over other new requirements for policing grants that Sessions imposed on cities in July, aimed at punishing sanctuary cities.

Chicago filed a lawsuit in August and a federal judge sided with the city, issuing a preliminary injunction blocking the federal government from pulling crime-fighting grants.
