The question was, "If NFL makes new rule on anthem will you still stay in locker room and face the fine/penalty?"

An NFL player tweeted he would quit playing football if the NFL passes a new rule requiring players to stand during the national anthem.

He tweeted, "No I will be done playing football".

The statement came in a tweet, which was later deleted, with Matthews telling WSMV-TV it had been a "bad decision".

However, Matthews' father reportedly served in the Marines for 23 years, and his brother was actually killed in Afghanistan while working as a private defense contractor in 2015 after previously serving in Iraq.

In recent weeks, players have refused to stand during the anthem to protest racial inequality.

Matthews announced September 28 he was donating $75,000 to a group of "organizations working in oppressed communities".

Shortly after Kaepernick began to protest during the anthem, Matthews publicly criticized his former college quarterback, in part because of his brother. "If guys wanna have, I guess you would call it, a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away".

Matthews, who turned 28 on Thursday, is in the second year of a three-year, $15 million contract signed in the 2016 offseason.

And although he technically has not been kneeling, Matthews told ESPN: 'I plan to kneel until the president apologizes for the comments that he made, because I felt like those were very disrespectful comments'. As minorities, what do you want to happen before we say anything? 'As we said yesterday, there will be a discussion of these issues at the owners meeting next week. It's your right to stand or sit down. "I take full responsibility, and that's why it went down right after, but somebody caught me with a screenshot".
