Paris to ban combustion-engine cars by 2030

Soon, drivers will only have the option of using electric cars in Paris as authorities in the French capital have announced plans to remove all gas- and diesel-powered cars by 2030.

France, along with the United Kingdom, made headlines earlier this summer by announcing plans to phase out sales of gasoline- and diesel-engined cars by 2040, but it appears the city of Paris has an even earlier target in mind.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", said Christophe Najdovski, who is responsible for transport policy at the office of Mayor Anne Hidalgo. Paris has also instituted temporary auto bans inside the city in response to pollutant levels in the area, causing some irritation from city dwellers who have to commute by vehicle.

Cities across the globe have announced similar plans in recent months to reduce or eliminate gas- and diesel-fueled cars.

Many Parisians don't own a auto but Hidalgo still has angered many of them with her efforts to make Paris a greener city, notably by adding cycling paths that have slowed vehicle traffic along the Seine River.

Paris has seen significant amounts of rising air pollution in the last few years. Electric cars will not be affected by the ban. City dwellers there rely heavily on public transportation and heavily utilize bike sharing networks and scooters.

Officials hope that France as an entire country will ditch cars dependent on fossil fuels by 2040. The deadline for those cars is 2024, which is when the city will play host to the Olympic games. "If we want to achieve this, it implies that the end of diesel and gasoline should take place several years in advance in urban areas, and particularly in big cities".

According to 2016, re are 32 million vehicles in France with 66 million inhabitants.
