Sheryl Sandberg Says Facebook Supports Revealing Russia-Linked Ads

As recently as July 20th, the social media titan insisted that Russian actors hadn't bought advertisements on the network - though, to their credit, the contractors Facebook uses to scan potential ads weren't trained to screen out political content or propaganda.

Sheryl Sandberg on Thursday confirmed reports that the House Intelligence Committee will be publicizing thousands of Facebook ads linked to Russian Federation that appeared during the 2016 election. The Senate Intelligence Committee is also holding an open hearing with the three companies that day. Twitter has since reversed its stance and reinstated Blackburn's ad.

In December 2016, Zuckerberg said Facebook is "not a traditional media company".

Asked if Facebook contributed to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's defeat past year, Sandberg, an open Clinton supporter during the campaign, did not answer directly, but said it was important the website was "free from abuse" during any election in any country.

"We don't want this kind of foreign interference" on Facebook, Sandberg added.

Sandberg is in Washington this week meeting with other lawmakers as well. If the House Intelligence Committee is able to release the ads, Conaway on Wednesday predicted it would not happen before the scheduled hearing.

Previously, Facebook declined to make the ads public.

Conaway said it was unlikely the ads would be released before Facebook will testify to Congress about Russian interference on November 1.

"My personal view is that they are publishers but that is only my personal view, that is not an Ofcom view", she told politicians.

'You and I as voters are responsible for where we get information and how we trust it, and whether we trust it, ' Conaway said.

Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) have formed a coalition to press Facebook for action on racial issues, a congressional aide with knowledge of the discussions tells The Hill. The person said the ads were meant to inflame all sides, with some showing white police officers beating black people.

"In reviewing the ads buys, we have found approximately $100,000 in ad spending from June of 2015 to May of 2017 - associated with roughly 3,000 ads - that was connected to about 470 inauthentic accounts and Pages in violation of our policies".

The company disclosed last month that it found ads linked to fake accounts - likely run from Russian Federation - that sought to influence the election.

"It is my belief that Facebook can not be the Trojan Horse through which America's vulnerabilities are exploited", Kelly wrote.

A data mining and analysis company that worked on President Donald Trump's campaign confirmed that it will also turn over information to the House intelligence committee to "provide it with information that might help its investigation" on Thursday.
