Snapchat news update as popular messaging app gets new Context Cards feature

The first context card that appears contaisn basic information like the name of the place, category of venue - eg department store or restaurant - and partner's rating. For instance, if your friend sends you a Snap from a restaurant, you can swipe up to see a Context Card that houses its location, user reviews, and contact information.

For launch, context cards will be available in the USA, U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on both Android and iOS.

Country specific versions for the rest of the world are expected in the near future.

The Context Cards will vary by type of venue and the information available about each location.

Not all of the services and information will display at once for every location, but Snap says the idea is to create a personalized feed that's relevant to what each user might need at the time.

"With Context Cards, Snaps have become the visual starting point for learning more about the world, empowering our community to get more information about anything that catches their eye", the Snap team wrote in a blog post. That will let users access related posts submitted to Our Story (if they're tagged at or near the location) as well as imagery from partners. Context Cards won't be limited to single Snaps either, as Snapchat is integrating them into Stories as well.

Context Cards should prove handy for a lot of Snapchat users, and the fact they lie behind a fairly discreet menu means they're less annoying than more orthodox ads.

To find Context Cards, swipe up on any Snaps that say "more" at the bottom.

Additional cards may contain reviews, hours of operation, phone numbers and links to hail a ride or book a reservation.
