Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says players 'disrespecting flag' won't play

FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has not had any discussions with Jerry Jones regarding the owner and general manager's comments Sunday that players "disrespecting the flag" would not play.

"If there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play", Jones said Sunday.

Last year, an item of fake news (the real kind) emerged regarding the anthem controversy, claiming that specific owners had told told players "this is MY stage" and instructing them to stand for the anthem.

"If it comes between the impression or the perception that we're not standing together, supporting each other, or the perception that we're disrespecting the flag, the perception that we're not together will be secondary to not respecting the flag", Jones said. "We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind, that the (NFL) and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag".

Shortly after Jones made the comments, the National Football League Players Association released a statement saying in part "We should not stifle these discussions and can not allow our rights to become subservient to the very opinions our constitution protects". "We made our expression".

"Our vice president, if in his opinion, there's disrespect of the flag then he should express himself however he wants to say".

After Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers, Jones was asked about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the Indianapolis Colts' game after more than 20 members of the San Francisco 49ers knelt during the anthem.

"During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking".

In the two games since, the Cowboys have stood during the national anthem. I know what he thinks. Jones said Trump said the entire issue could have been avoided if the NFL enforced a rule stating players must stand for the national anthem; however, that requirement is not included in the NFL's game operations manual.

"Trump has made [standing for the anthem] about patriotism", Ross added. "I think we've had great communication with our players in terms of the way to do things in terms of how we can certainly have respect and be sensitive to the things that they're faced with as we did in Arizona", he said. "Whenever you're dealing with the flag, you're dealing with something different". "They don't think it's disrespecting the flag".
