Woman 'shot dead after ramming auto into cop' after high-speed chase

Miami Beach Police spokesman, Ernesto Rodriguez, said: "Miami Beach officers are now at the scene of a very active investigation".

"The vehicle was coming westbound from Ocean on 12th and went through the red light, struck an occupied auto on 12th and Collins", said Dan Oates, the Miami Beach Police Chief. She was confronted by police officers near Washington and 12th who surrounded her auto.

Once police arrived on the scene and asked the driver to get out of the vehicle, the driver slammed the accelerator and ran over a police officer.

Police officers then fired several shots at the driver's black BMW, striking the female driver.

The incident happened near 12 Street and Washington Avenue.

Officers said the driver kept going and crashed into a white SUV on 12th Street and Collins Avenue.

Oates said the officer who was struck was "stable and alert" at the hospital.

"All of the sudden she like starts the auto and runs over the policeman", a witness said. Police confirmed a man was in the vehicle with the woman. Emergency workers rushed her to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but she could not be saved.

Miguel Garcia, a tourist from Chile, said he was coming back from the beach when he saw the crash happen.

"I never thought I was going to see shots in this part of the city", Garcia said, adding that the woman then lost control of the auto and hit an additional vehicle, on the corner of 12th Street and Washington Avenue. Visitors were being told it could be hours before they could get to their cars parked on the street.
