United States approves $15 billion worth THAAD missiles sale to Saudi Arabia

United States approves $15 billion worth THAAD missiles sale to Saudi Arabia

Russia's Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation has officially confirmed the conclusion of the deal with Saudi Arabia on the supply of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems and other weapons.

When asked about fears that Saudi Arabia could use the S-400 system against Iran, a Russian ally, Peskov said Moscow's decision to offer the missiles to Riyadh was not aimed at any third party.

A Saudi official has commented on Moscow's role in the Middle East following the "landmark" visit of the Saudi King to Russian Federation last week.

"We can speak only for ourselves", said Peskov.

The approval has now opened the way for Saudi Arabia's purchasing of the 44 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) launchers and 360 missiles, as well as fire control stations and radar, says a report in Reuters.

The presence of Russian Federation in the Middle East will contribute to the creation of the balance of power and resolve complex issues in the region, Zahir al Harithi, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Saudi Arabia's Consultative Council, told Sputnik Monday.

The US deployed THAAD to South Korea this year to guard against North Korea's shorter-range missiles, which has drawn criticism from China saying that the system's powerful radar can probe deep into its territory.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a friendly country", the statement read.

The US deal is believed to be part of a $110 billion arms package promised by President Trump to the Saudi kingdom during a visit in May.

"This potential sale will substantially increase Saudi Arabia's capability to defend itself against the growing ballistic missile threat in the region".
