Tropical Storm Ophelia develops in Atlantic, no threat to US

Heavy rainfall and storm surge flooding continued to be a danger across the region, the National Hurricane Centre said.

FORECAST: Nate will weaken as it pushes north, but it will still send moisture to the Charlotte area. It will drop more rain on the Ohio Valley and continue into the Northeast before exiting ME on Tuesday. Nate later weakened to a tropical storm.

Hugh Keeton, a reporter at WLOX-TV, reported flooding inside the first floor of Hard Rock Casino Hotel Biloxi. The storm will bring heavy rains, damaging winds, and storm surge. This is where Tropical Storm conditions are most likely today. The storm surge resulted in a new record water level in Pascagoula, along the MS coast near the Alabama border.

Possible tornadoes spawned by Nate struck further west Saturday night in parts of central Alabama, causing damage in Autauga and Lowndes counties.

States of emergency were declared in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Tropical Storm Ophelia was about 860 miles from the Azores and is not expected to come close to the United States, according to the 11 a.m. advisory Monday from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"President Donald Trump on Sunday approved Governor Kay Ivey's request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration for the State of Alabama". The fast moving hurricane that hit Category 2 winds at one point, should have lost steam as it moves through the Tennessee Valley.

Although the hurricane was not as powerful as last month's Maria and Irma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Florida all issued evacuation orders ahead of its arrival.

But since then, the storm's maximum sustained winds have dropped to 70 miles per hour putting it just below a Category 1 designation.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to about 17 percent of daily USA crude output and 5 percent of natural gas output, according to the US government estimates. The center will track northeast through the early morning hours with some of the stronger winds and rain bands reaching our southwest counties after 3 a.m.
