Western Michigan beats Buffalo in 7 OTs; teams set FBS points mark

It was a stark change from previous Western Michigan-Buffalo games, the past two of which were shutouts: a 38-0 Broncos win a year ago and a 33-0 Bulls win in 2013.

Apparently the sister of Western Michigan TE Donnie Ernsberger got a bit too excited after his touchdown.

Western Michigan beat Buffalo on Saturday, 71-68. Ernsberger's TD ended up tying the game with the extra point because Buffalo had scored seven points to start overtime. "They scored 71 or 72, then we have to score 73".

Hopefully you have a sibling who loves you as much as Western Michigan tight end Donnie Ernsberger's sister loves him.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the second overtime period.

But as improbable as that was, it doesn't really compare to what happened during the first overtime of the game.

139 - Combined points, the most for a game in FBS history.

In the seventh overtime, Buffalo settled for a 25-yard field goal, opening the door for Western Michigan to end the game short of a record-setting eighth overtime.

Western Michigan had the ball first in the fourth overtime, and put the pressure on Buffalo with another touchdown and a successful two-point conversion.

The hosts tied the game 31-31 with 34 seconds remaining, but Western Michigan managed to get into position to win in regulation.

Here's the real score: Someday, they'll look back knowing they participated in one of the most entertaining games in the history of college football. Western Michigan-Buffalo set the overtime points record of 136 points that was previously held by a four-overtime Boise State-Nevada game in 2007.
