Why Arun Shourie's speech worries the government

New Delhi-Slamming the Narendra Modi government over sliding economic growth and increasing job losses, former Union Minister Arun Shourie has likened demonetisation with suicide, saying the latter is too "a bold step".

"Which argument (in favour of demonetisation) today survives?"

He came down heavily on the Modi government that scrapped overnight Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes on November 8 past year, he said, "It was the largest money-laundering scheme ever, conceived and implemented entirely by the government", Shourie told NDTV.

Shourie said that Modi government does not pay any heed on experts' advice and decisions on country's economic policies are being taken by "two and a half persons" -- Amit Shah, PM Modi and an in-house lawyer - in "a sealed echo chamber". It was an "idiotic jolt" he continued, "everyone who had black converted it into white". On the GST, he said it was an "important reform, but (was) poorly implemented". Terrorism? Terrorists are still coming into India. "The rules have been amended seven times within three months", he explained while taking a dig at the "event management" of GST and comparison of new indirect tax regime with India's independence. "At the end they have nothing to say", he added.

Countering the criticism over the issue of demonetisation, he said that after demonetisation the cash to GDP ratio has come down to 9 per cent, before November 8, 2016, it was 12 percent.

While the BJP was dismissive of Sinha's comments, Shourie said it was their "standard operating procedure" to shoot down dissent. They are so self-satisfied with it. - Arun Shourie8.

Modi, head of the Group of Ministers for tackling IT-related glitches in GST network, referred to the steps taken on Friday by the GST council and said they had taken care of numerous problems faced by traders and other businessmen. "The one who actually has black money, is he keeping it in India in rupees?.Those who have black money, they keep it outside".

Shourie, former disinvestment, communication and information technology minister in the previous NDA government headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee, and who has also been a former editor of The Indian Express, also attacked the government on the issue of freedom of the press.

Continuing from where he had left recently, former BJP cabinet minister Arun Shourie on Friday once again lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying supporting him was a "mistake".
