Red Cross: Attack Illustrates Need For Blood

Las Vegas residents have rushed to donate blood to help victims of the deadliest ever United States gun attack, which left at least 50 people dead and more than 400 injured.

BloodSource Shasta is part of Blood Systems Inc. which has a blood bank in Las Vegas. "There is not a lot anyone can do but we all have extra blood", Baldwin said. "And then if so, if they need help, then absolutely we will send what we can".

You are encouraged to make an appointment on their website but walk-ins are accepted.

A GoFundMe account has also been created to assist victims and their families.

A spokesperson for the Rhode Island Blood Center on Monday said the attack was a "heartbreaking and sobering reminder" of how important it is for people to donate blood when possible. It's nice to see our fellow human beings being willing to roll up their sleeves and donate blood and I think that's a normal thing we get in today's society.

In his lifetime, Brewer has donated nine gallons of blood.

"Every two seconds in the US somebody needs a blood transfusion and that's just on a regular day", Lambert added.

Lines for many blood donation centers in the Las Vegas area wrapped around the corner.

The blood center is taking all types of blood donations, but 0-negative donations are most needed.

United Blood Services said they have sister facilities in Las Vegas that supply most of the blood in Las Vegas.

The Community Blood Center supplies blood to about 55 local hospitals. You sit at home and think, how can I help? They suggest using the Red Cross app, visiting the website www.redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS. It can take 24 to 36 hours to collect, test, process and distribute blood where it's needed. Blood has a shelf life of 42 days.
