AIADMK crisis: Madras HC stays floor test until Sept 20

AIADMK crisis: Madras HC stays floor test until Sept 20

The unified ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu on Thursday asserted that it has enough MLAs to prove its majority in the Assembly, and it was not necessary to conduct a floor test at this juncture.

Stalin, in his petition, had sought a direction to the Governor to order a floor test for the Palanisami government, claiming that it has lost its majority in view of the 19 MLAs expressing their lack of confidence in the Chief Minister.

The court passed the interim order after apprehensions by the main opposition party, DMK, and the Dhinakaran camp about possible disqualification of 19 dissident AIADMK MLAs by the assembly Speaker.

Speaker P Dhanapal had issued notices to the legislators and asked them to appear before him on Thursday.

Of the 234 members of the Legislative Assembly, the present government enjoys the support of only 113, excluding the Speaker, against the minimum requirement of 117 MLAs.

The allegations resonated at the general council meeting convened by the unified party on Wednesday, when jailed leader V K Sasikala was expelled from the post of general secretary.

An AIADMK MLA on Thursday told reporters that the TTV Dhinakaran faction has made a decision to meet the President soon over a wide range of issues. Senior ministers say that the hidden agenda of TTV-DMK combine would not succeed and the government would embark on a mission to gain strength by way of numbers.

On his rival AIADMK camp's criticism that he has joined hands with DMK in his tussle against Palanisamy, Dhinakaran said "there is no direct or indirect alliance with that party".

"The Governor delayed (on directing floor test), but DMK won't keep quiet".

The rebel leader threatened to pull down the government "to save the AIADMK", the ruling party in Tamil Nadu that has been in turmoil since the death of its supremo J Jayalalithaa in December past year. "However, if a challenge emerged for AIADMK government, all of those, who won on AIADMK's two leaves symbol, would support the government under Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami", he said.

Vijila Sathyananth, of the Dinakaran faction, told the media in Chennai that the faction would soon hold a general council meet of the party after the consent of their general secretary - VK Sasikala.

Dhinakaran had earlier dismissed the September 12 General Council as a "public meeting", saying the court could have the final say on the matter.
