Sopore encounter : 1 militant killed, operation continues

A police spokesperson reportedly said that the terrorists had secretly opened fire on the patrolling forces in the middle of the day, in the Sopore township of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The security forces launched a search operation in Sopore after inputs of presence of militants in a double-storey building in the area.

Police identified the militant as Shahid Ahmad Sheikh of Kacxhloo village. One AK rifle, 2 AK magazine, 1 grenade, 23 AK rounds and a pouch was recovered from the encounter site.

The encounter is still underway, report said. Azadi and Pro-Islam slogans shouted during the rally.

When the forces were conducting the search operation, militants opened fire upon them following which the security personnel retaliated, triggering an encounter in which one militant was killed, police officer said.

The police official said that as a part of security measure to avoid and kind of civilian casualty, all educational institutions, including Higher Secondary schools and the Degree College in Sopore have been closed.

Meanwhile, The Home Minster will embark on a 3-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday in an apparent outreach attempt to bring peace in the state.
