Rally organisers have said the September 10 event now sits as the largest LGBTQ demonstration in Australian history, a declaration reported by ABC.

"The threat to marriage is not gay couples, it is a lack of loving commitment", he said.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released a sample of the paper it will send out to voters as it pushes ahead with the same-sex marriage postal survey.

The survey forms with the question "Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?" will be mailed to voters from this Tuesday.

In a surprise speech on Sunday, the leader of the centre-right Liberal party said same-sex marriage had been legalised in 23 countries with no impact on traditional marriage. Alex Greenwich, co-chair of Australian Marriage Equality, says: 'This is going to take all of us to win it. "Has life as we know it ground to a halt?"

But the No campaign is also ramping up its efforts to convince Australians not to change the law, and says any predictions of victory from their opponents are premature. "If I'm elected Prime Minister Tanya and I will introduce a legislation to marriage equality in the first 100 days", Shorten said.

He noted other countries where same-sex marriage had been legalised.

Some argue that the posting of the non-legally binding survey is a waste of government funds because parliament should simply vote on the issue.
