Springboks have blueprint to beat vulnerable All Blacks

Springboks have blueprint to beat vulnerable All Blacks

The Rugby Championship is in full swing, as New Zealand faced a courageous Argentina challenge today but ultimately saw them off in style, before Australia and South Africa played out an enthralling draw, 23 points apiece.

The Wallabies had a 10-point lead in the 47th minute after tries to Kurtley Beale and Tatafu Polota-Nau.

South Africa had the best chance of grabbing the win, going through phase after phase inside the Australia half as time ran out but Jantjies fluffed his drop goal attempt when the ball finally came back to him.

The Springboks said prop Coenie Oosthuizen broke an arm in the second half and will be replaced by uncapped Wilco Louw for the match next weekend against New Zealand.

'Missed opportunity there, ' said Australia captain Michael Hooper. But a lack of impact from loose forwards Sean McMahon and Ned Hanigan, and problems at the set-piece leave Michael Cheika with plenty of work to do ahead of next week's assignment against Argentina. Restarts weren't up to scratch, but a lot to like there.

The result, two weeks after a 35-29 loss to the All Blacks in Dunedin, leaves the Wallabies with a draw and two losses.

Outside center Jesse Kriel scored the first try for South Africa from a grubber kick.

Allister Coetzee was particularly pleased with the response of his team after they went 20-10 down in the 48th minute.

Moore and Polota-Nau have been influential for Uelese, and the latter was quick to lavish praise on the potential heir to the Wallabies' hooking spot.

Foley's penalty after the halftime siren gave the Wallabies a 13-10 edge, and when Polota-Nau barged over after a lineout and rolling maul, the Wallabies led 20-10.

All three of the world champions' first half tries at Taranaki Regional Stadium to Nehe Milner-Skudder, Anton Leinert- Brown and Israel Dagg were created by finding space in three very different situations.

A reflection of their new-found confidence came when coach Allister Coetzee, who oversaw losses in eight of 12 Tests previous year, said the team would not be happy with a draw even away from home against the twice former World Cup winners.

"This team now has got great character and culture and that's what wins trophies". We had three line breaks and no reward in the last couple of minutes. Things that we've worked on have paid off.

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen looks set to recall scrum-half Aaron Smith to New Zealand's starting lineup for their Rugby Championship clash with the Springboks next Saturday.
