'It' Final Box Office Clears Massive $123M in US Bow

'It' Final Box Office Clears Massive $123M in US Bow

Recently on his Twitter, Stephen King began proving some of the most biggest minds of the macabre are also the nicest.

The new film is directed by Andy Muschietti, who also helmed 2013's horror movie Mama, and topped the United Kingdom box office following its opening weekend with £9,884,000 across 604 cinemas, film studio Warner Bros said.

If moviegoers were waiting for a thumbs up from Stephen King before checking out the new big screen adaptation of his novel "It", he just gave it.

New Zealand box office results from the weekend will be released later on Monday.

The previous record holder for the biggest horror film opening was 'Paranormal Activity 3′ which had opened with $52.6m in 2011, and the biggest September debut was 'Hotel Transylvania 2′ which had grossed $48.5m in 2015.

"It" was directed by Andy Muschietti, who is already being courted for another instalment. Only Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" did better in their first weekends.

Earning an estimated $117.2 million (€97.3 million), "It" scored the largest ever opening for a horror movie and the largest September opening of all time. Box Office Mojo has the estimates, and the estimates are good for IT and basically nothing else because this movie overshadows the other nine on the list. The road ahead is bright for It which could finish its domestic run in the $250-300M range which is just mind-blowing for a $35M production.

Reviews were solid if not spectacular, and opening night audiences gave "It" an average grade of B+, according to market research firm CinemaScore.

The weekend box office for "It" is even more remarkable given the movie only cost $35 million to produce. This weekend, Homecoming dropped 45.3 percent to bring in another $2 million. "What saves the film from collapsing is the acting by the children, who are effortlessly natural, whether they are just being boys or just being scared kids". The worldwide sum hit $495.3M while the global gross rose to $823M passing the $816.3M of Wonder Woman in the process. Warner Bros. says an "It" sequel is coming in 2019. It is part of the popular "Conjuring" series of movies.
