9 arrested after video shows looting during Hurricane Irma

Police across Florida have already arrested at least 37 people for looting in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, which swept over the state Sunday.

WPLG cameras caught the group looting outside Simon's Sportswear in Fort Lauderdale.

Local TV images also showed another group of alleged looters running in and out of a store through a broken window carrying boxes of sneakers.

The Miami-Dade Police Department alone claims to have made 28 arrests since Sunday.

Before the storm hit, police Chief Rick Maglione had pledged to protect evacuated homes. "We're on patrol & won't tolerate criminal activity as our community recovers from #HurricaneIrma!". They served a warning to people thinking about looting that they will be caught.

Officers with Gainesville Police Aviation, obviously unable to take the helicopter out, wrote that they had switched to "playing the role of tree and chainsaw crew through the storm".

In another case, a 30-year-old man was caught burglarizing Atlantic Hardscapes in St. Lucie on Saturday.

Police were dealing with looters even before the storm touched down, though.

Deputies were notified after the homeowners were monitoring their homes via surveillance.

The owners of the home were out of the country, but they spotted a burglary in progress on their home security cameras and called the Broward Sheriff's Office.

While police in Broward and Pembroke Pines have issued threats to looters, Orlando police urged the public to not spread false reports of burglaries. "Choose wisely and stay home". "Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact".
