Goodwood revival for TVR Griffith

Goodwood revival for TVR Griffith

Well, all that excitement has broken free today as TVR took the wraps off the new Griffith. Clearly it's not talking about the Ford-sourced crate V8 when discussing cutting edge, but more of that later.

Bearing the same name as the 1991 model, the new sports vehicle couldn't be more different.

The two-seater interior is a little more sparse but there are traditional dials and switches mixed in with up-to-date infotainment screens.

Involved in developing the body was Gordon Murray, which used his new iStream technology to simplify the manufacturing process of the carbon fiber and improve structural rigidity. This has helped to keep the weight of the Griffith down to just 1,250kg and this advanced structure provide the auto with good rigidity and 50:50 weight distribution. The new Griffith continues this ethos, with a bulging and muscular bodywork design featuring a massive front grille, distinctive L-shaped taillights and side-exiting exhausts. TVR says that the electric power assisted steering has been carefully tuned to offer maneuverability "without compromising feel or stability". The Griff does also have ABS and configurable traction control: blame the European Union law-makers if you have a problem with that.

Power comes from a Cosworth-developed 5.0-litre V8 good for at least 357kW. A dry oil sump - which prevents surges of oil from adversely affecting the engine during high-speed cornering - also features. Although the first edition of the press pack quotes no power or torque figures, TVR's official video created in conjunction with Goodwood states the engine produces 480bhp. The only transmission option is a six-speed manual - non-car enthusiasts need not apply. With stats like these, performance comes easy: 0-100 miles per hour (0-161 km/h) comes in just over six seconds and the top speed sits at a round 200 miles per hour (322 km/h).

Under the bonnet of the new British muscle auto is a 5.0-litre V8 producing 468bhp - that means it's good for 0-62mph in under four seconds. The floor-mounted, aluminium pedals look suitably proper, too.

TVR has announced it will build 500 "Launch Edition" cars, each priced at £90,000 ($A155,000), and now says nearly all of them have been sold. They will come with a full leather interior and in a wide rage of colours.

Called the Griffith, TVR has brought back a name that was used throughout the brand's history, with this auto capable of speeds up to 200mph and a 0-60mph time of less than four seconds.
