WhatsApp announces it will soon charge big businesses

The program features a green badge next to business contacts indicating that the business is verified by the service.

WhatsApp will be testing new features to make it easier for people to communicate with businesses they want to reach on WhatsApp, the messaging service said on a blog post.

The communications from businesses are "opt-in" for users. These are now being tested in Europe, India, Brazil and Indonesia before a wider release.

WhatsApp has confirmed that it is testing a new business app as well aimed at enterprise solutions. "We do intend on charging businesses in the future", said WhatsApp COO Matt Idema.

In the beginning, the business version of WhatsApp will be free to use, after that WhatsApp is looking to charge businesses in exchange for offering certain tools to them.

With the new app, the Facebook-owned company hopes that businesses will be able to establish direct contact with consumers seamlessly while ensuring authenticity. "That could mean communicating with your bank about whether a recent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight". That leaves Messenger (which Zuckerberg wants to "move a little faster" on) and WhatsApp, which Facebook paid a whopping $22 billion for back in 2014. User feedback will be important during the process and there will be several rounds of improvements before the feature is fully rolled out for everyone.

The two tools enable companies of all sizes, from small to global, to communicate with customers via WhatsApp.

Idema didn't rule out that WhatsApp could show ads to users at some point but said the focus was now on connecting businesses and users. The social media and tech giant, Facebook is gearing up to make bucks from WhatsApp. With the new Business app, they can easily manage the conversations and get better tools to explore the new ways of business promotion on WhatsApp. Small businesses can also send customers updates of various kinds via the WhatsApp Business app, which targets small businesses.
