Union Ministers Uma Bharti and Rajiv Pratap Rudy Resigned

Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy has resigned ahead of the Cabinet reshuffle.

Jaitley has held the defence and finance portfolios both after Manohar Parrikar quit as the defence minister to return to Goa as chief minister.

Jaitley, who has been made the State's election in-charge, as well as Narendra Singh, Jitendra Singh, PP Chaudhury and Niramala Sitharaman - the four co-incharges - met Shah at his residence and were joined by senior organisational leaders, including general secretaries Ram Lal and Bhupender Yadav. The last Cabinet reshuffle took place in July a year ago.

The reshuffle could see the entry of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) nominees into the ministry, with the party striking an alliance with the BJP in Bihar recently. The Economic Times reported that Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Kalraj Mishra also tendered his resignation.

Rajiv Pratap Rudy met BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday after which resignation decision was conveyed to the media.

Unconfirmed reports say transport and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari may get additional responsibility of railways.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be out of the country from September 3 to September 7 for the Brics summit in China and a state visit to Myanmar. He said on Thursday that he will not be occupying the Defence Minister post for long, hinting at the imminent reshuffle.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu was among the probables to be removed from the Cabinet, considering the resignation offered by him following the back-toback train derailment incidents in UP's Muzaffarnagar and Auriya districts.

"At least not for very long", Jaitley said in response to questions on how long he would continue as Defence Minister. "He has been given the new Ministry of Skill Development".

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment Ministry following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May.
