150 miles for $30875, 200-plus miles in 2019 — Nissan Leaf debuts

As yet Nissan have not announced where the New LEAF will be produced and details for the model are expected to be revealed soon.

Nissan has sold nearly 300,000 units of the first-generation Leaf and the car's sales remain robust even at the end of its model cycle.

The new Nissan LEAF's design expresses the company's forward-thinking attitude.

Critically, despite the increased range, the battery pack has not grown.

Nissan tell us the car's new e-powertrain includes a new high-tech lithium-ion battery pack.

While it doesn't look like it from where we sit in the Antipodes, Nissan has a proper hit on its hands with the all-electric hatchback, the Leaf. It didn't quite work out that way. Signalling that the new Leaf is so much more than just EV project for display but something that will lead their global charge. That's the same as Jaguar's forthcoming I-Pace electric SUV and more than Tesla's Model 3.

About Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. And Volkswagen, Honda, Ford and Toyota are among the many others working on their own electric cars. Familiar Nissan design features include the signature boomerang-shaped lamps and V-motion flow in the front. To date, Nissan has sold 280,000 Leafs.

The new Nissan LEAF offers a range of 400 kilometers.

With 150 miles on a single charge, the new Leaf still doesn't match the range of either of those cars, but it does beat them on price. It allows the Leaf to drive itself in stop-and-go traffic and in single-lane highway journeys, even around curves.

Then there's the new automatic parking function, ProPilot Park. ProPilot Park handles the steering, braking, gear switching and acceleration, so you can concentrate on lowering your sunglasses as you glide into a tight spot.

Another new gizmo is Nissan's so-called e-Pedal.

That essentially means the brake pedal is not required. By increasing the force of the car's regenerative braking as the pedal is lifted, the need to shift your right foot to the brake pedal is minimised. Nissan says it can cover 90 percent of a driver's needs, relieving drivers of the stress of shifting back and forth from the brake and accelerator. In its heyday, the Leaf racked up automotive awards, including the 2011 European Car of the Year, the 2011 World Car of the Year, and the 2011-2012 Car of the Year Japan.

Nissan says accessing that power will be easier, too, thanks to what it terms the e-Pedal. Most of these focused on intelligent driver assistance features, including ProPILOT semi-autonomous driving and parking capabilities. More information on Nissan in North America and the complete line of Nissan and INFINITI vehicles can be found online at www.nissanusa.com and www.infinitiusa.com, or visit the USA media sites nissannews.com and infinitinews.com. Even with the added features, Nissan lowered the price by $690 from the 2017 model, making it attractive to current owners, he said.

But the Leaf faces a crowding field of rivals. The Tesla Model 3 starts at $35,000 but quickly jumps higher with the addition of various upgrades.

Chevrolet's Bolt EV has a 238-mile range and a $37,495 starting price.

Nissan is also promoting its ProPILOT features here, which offer intelligent, hands-free parking, as well as SAE Level 2 features when driving on single-lane highways, including lane-keeping and maintaining distance between the auto and vehicles ahead, with automatic acceleration and braking.

It will be interesting to see how it fares in the new motoring climate.

The second-gen Leaf will go on sale internationally next year.
