Unexploded bombs are regularly found in German cities.

The fire service said the evacuation of two hospitals, including premature babies and patients in intensive care, had been completed and they were now helping about 500 elderly people leave residences and care homes.

About 60,000 people had to leave their homes after being warned that an uncontrolled explosion could flatten a city block.

Many of those who have been forced to leave have been offered space in a temporary centre at the site of Frankfurt's trade fair. If that fails they will try to cut the fuses away with a water jet.

The bomb, which was dropped by the British during Allied bombing campaigns, is an aerial mine HC 4000, weighing 1.4 tonnes, reports Efe news. Officials said it would take four hours to disarm the bomb.

Around 60,000 people have left their homes in the largest evacuation in a German city since the war.

An average of about 2,000 tonnes of unexploded ordnance are found each year in Germany.

Three police explosives experts in Goettingen were killed in 2010 while preparing to defuse a 1,000 lb (450 kg) bomb.

Those affected have been offered free entry to several of the city's museums, while shelters have also been opened for residents.

Police used a helicopter with heat-sensing cameras to ensure the evacuation zone, which covers a radius of around one mile, was completely clear.
