Mexico Will Pay for the Wall - 'It May Be Through Reimbursement'

President Donald Trump is promising billions to help Texas rebuild from Hurricane Harvey, but his Republican allies in the House are looking at cutting nearly $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president's border wall.

Trump, a week into his presidency, indicated to Mexico's president Enrique Pena Nieto that he understood the Mexican government would not outright pay the U.S.to build a border wall.

At each juncture, Mexican officials reiterated what they have long maintained.

Trump, who announced his candidacy for president with a speech that described Mexicans as "rapists", has strained the historically close relationship between the US and Mexico.

In response, the country's foreign ministry released a statement saying Mexico would not pay for a wall or other physical barrier at the border "under any circumstances".

"The position of the Mexican government is a serious position, it is a professional position, and it is a position based in Mexican sovereignty", he said.

"If we have to close down our government, we're building that wall". "We need the wall".

"It has nothing to do with it", Trump said.

Trump tweeted Sunday afternoon that "we must have THE WALL".

Most recently, Trump has accused McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan of "creating a mess" after Congress tried to change legislation that would raise the federal debt ceiling.

"We expect to hear their proposal for getting done all that we have to get done in September", Schumer spokesman Matt House said.

"Sheriff Joe is a patriot. And Sheriff Joe was very unfairly treated by the Obama administration, especially right before an election, an election that he would have won", Trump said.

Trump adds that he stands by his pardon and says, "I think the people of Arizona who really know him best would agree with me".

Trump also defended his decision to announce the pardon as Hurricane Harvey bore down on the Texas coast. Congressional leaders have not said exactly how they will handle the aid package.

Like the failed push to repeal former President Barack Obama's health care law, the tax effort is likely to encounter strong Democratic opposition and divisions among Republicans, leaving its fate uncertain.

In the midst of a natural disaster, the USA government can be slow to accept foreign assistance because of the bureaucratic hassle involved in clearing materials brought into the country and securing access for foreigners on short notice, said Kelly.

He's also pointing to controversial pardons by previous presidents.

A number of business executives resigned from government advisory boards after Trump's comments.
