Doctor's body found in seashore after Mumbai deluge

Dr Amrapurkar was believed to have fallen into a manhole near Lower Parel while walking on a flooded road on Tuesday evening.

A gastroenterologist by profession, Dr Amarapurkar was missing since Tuesday, after he abandoned his vehicle and chose to walk near his home in Elphinstone Road railway station.

Speaking to mid-day, Mumbai police spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashmi Karandikar, said, "We found his body at 6.30 am and have sent it to Sion Hospital for a post-mortem".

A complaint has been registered in the Dadar Police Station on account of the eyewitnesses, while the police are further investigating the matter.

Dr Amarapurkar's colleagues have said that he left for home after lunch at the hospital cafeteria even though he was urged to stay back until it was safer to go out.

"He asked driver to take vehicle home and chose to walk since he thought it will take less time".

His flat is barely 10 minutes away from the spot where he got down but according to reports, he was swallowed by an open, flooded manhole. City firemen, along with NDRF and BMC personnel, had launched a search operation yesterday to locate the doctor. His umbrella, that was found near a manhole which was searched, offered the only indication that he was at that location. A witness said, "Dr Amarapurkar fell into the manhole suddenly and disappeared before anybody could react".

The body of the noted doctor was discovered near seashore at Worli, Mumbai on Thursday morning.

The doctor's family and friends had circulated countless messages on social media to trace him throughout Wednesday. Family members earlier told The Indian Express that the gastroenterologist was returning home from Bombay Hospital when he made a decision to walk home as it was around 10 minutes away.
