Lavrov: Russia to protect itself in 'sanctions war'

Russian Federation does not accept a North Korea that possesses nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"If this double freezing finally takes place, then we can sit down and start from the very beginning - to sign a paper which will stress respect for the sovereignty of all those parties involved, including North Korea", Lavrov said.

"Now [North Korea] claims that it has legal rights to make nuclear weapons and has already [done so]", he said.

Lavrov's visit to Thailand comes just two days after his United States counterpart Rex Tillerson traveled to Bangkok to discuss North Korea.

Both Russia and China have a "range of proposals" aimed at preventing what could become "one of the deepest conflicts" and a "crisis with a big number of casualties".

On Friday, Lavrov expressed his worries about the recent standoff between the United States and North Korea.

Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has called on North Korea to stop testing missiles in exchange for the US canceling its military exercises with South Korea.

Russian Federation has put its eastern air defenses on high alert according to a senator, due to what Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called "over-the-top" rhetoric between the United States and North Korea.

It wasn't clear whether Ozerov was speaking with authority from the Kremlin or merely as an observer, but Russia's top diplomat continued to urge both North Korea and the United States to tone down the rhetoric that has prompted global fear of a direct military conflict over Pyongyang's continued pursuit of a nuclear weapons program and long-range missile system.

A similar position was voiced earlier on Friday by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said Berlin would support "any non-military solutions" regarding North Korea but deemed an escalation of rhetoric "the wrong answer".

"I think China can do a lot more, yes".
