James Damore: Working at Google Is Like Being in a 'Cult'

James Damore: Working at Google Is Like Being in a 'Cult'

The memo leaked out and led to a barrage of criticism channelled towards Google's management. That logo emerged over the last few days and went viral on Reddit and Twitter for its implication that Google is an authoritarian regime that represses freedom of speech. Other posts, seen in screenshots of Memegen that were shared with The New York Times by a Google employee, questioned why Google seemed to be taking cues from outsiders.

"If Google continues to ignore the very real issues raised by its diversity policies and corporate culture, it will be walking blind into the future-unable to meet the needs of its remarkable employees and sure to disappoint its billions of users", Damore wrote.

Google has prided itself on its openness. Google was justified in revoking his right to represent it as an employee. That's a big challenge when Google's parent company, Alphabet, now employs 76,000 employees around the world.

James Damore, the engineer fired by Google after penning a memo crtiticizing the company's diversity policy, published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal explaining "Why I was sacked by Google". Google said he had crossed the line "by advancing harmful gender stereotypes" and many employees were upset about the views outlined in the memo.

James Damore himself has posted countless articles backing him up and has even invited people, through a Twitter page (describing him as fired for "telling the truth") to dispute his claims in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) forum.

In the 10-page, 3,300-word manifesto, the 28-year-old argues that a gender gap at Google exists not exclusively because of sexism, but in part because of "biological" differences between men and women. But Damore isn't qualified to discuss them in a scientific context. Take a look at a couple more banners below. Damore was sacked on Monday. Some of the Google employees also identified as gay or supportive of diversity efforts.

Damore is now on tour of mostly conservative media outlets. A number of Google employees who had been outspoken on the matter started facing harassment on the internet.

He distributed the "memo" widely inside the company. That reignited concerns that internal discussions would not stay private.
