China Opposes Japan Statements on South China Sea

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Cayetano's approach on how to deal with China' extensive claim to the resource-rich waters was just "overly-interpreted".

"First of all, I think it was a very productive and constructive dialogue, conference, and meeting..."

"Vietnam has emerged as Southeast Asia's loudest voice in resisting China's expansionist moves in the South China Sea", the Nikkei Asian Review wrote after a weekend of wrangling among southeast Asian countries over a South China Sea code of conduct.

Sokhonn attempted to equate the drafting of joint statements to making soup, where he said each country would like to add their own "ingredients" but that in the end the soup had to be palatable to all ASEAN member states.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) foreign ministers, in a joint statement released Sunday, emphasized "non-militarization" and "self-restraint" in the South China Sea.

Deputy FM Dung noted that together with many countries, Vietnam raised concerns about the situation in the East Sea, including activities of reclamation, construction and militarization, while calling for maintaining principles and stance regarding the East Sea already specified in ASEAN documents as well as agreed by ASEAN and its partners, especially the peaceful settlement of disputes without use or threat to use force while respecting worldwide law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and diplomatic and legal process. "It's not reflective of the present position", the Foreign Affairs Secretary said.

Cayetano mentioned that the Joint Communique, which included discussion on the issue of South China Sea, is a testament of ASEAN centrality where member-states decide on consensus.

Senator Leila de Lima slammed Cayetano who appeared to be "China's spokesperson in Asean".

"The Duterte government and DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano have not only completely relinquished the Philippines' lead role in Asean of countering China's ambition of regional domination".

As next year marks the 15th anniversary of China and Asean establishing their strategic partnership, Xi said China would like to take the year as an opportunity to appreciate all that has been accomplished and look at what can be done over the long run.
