60 children die in UP hospital for want of oxygen supplies

"We have learnt that supply of oxygen was inadequate between 11:30 PM in the night (on Thursday) till 1:30 AM in the wee hours of Friday". Raids have been conducted at the Lucknow-based firm, which stopped supply of oxygen to the hospital as previous bills were not paid. "The role of oxygen gas vendor who was allocated the job during the previous government will also be investigated". "He called me to offer all sorts of support", said the newly elected Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The opposition parties, however, continued their attack on Adityanath.

The Congress today also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Praveen Modi said that till date Rs 20 lakh payment was pending with the hospital and that he had supplied liquid oxygen on Friday too, after a request made by the Divisional Commissioner. The lack of oxygen allegedly led to encephalitis, which is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain, following which the children died.

The death toll of kids rose to seventy two on Sunday in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh where BJP is ruling with Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister. He said he had ascertained from the doctors that the deaths had not occurred from a lack of oxygen.

Vaibhav Maheshwari, state spokesman of AAP told IANS "it was a matter of shame that the Chief Minister was mum on such a serious issue and that the state government was trying to defuse facts".

"In my view, this is a clear case of corruption and negligence, and whosoever is found guilty in the tragic incident will certainly face stringent action", he added.

Gorakhpur DM Rajeev Rautela said that the cause of the deaths at the BRD Hospital was the disruption in the supply of liquid oxygen and further appealed to the suppliers to not cut the supply henceforth.

Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh had said that according to reports from the paediatric department of the college, 60 children died due to various diseases since August 7.

Hospital officials deny lack of oxygen caused the deaths, saying alternative supplies were found, and blamed numerous deaths instead on encephalitis and unspecified issues related to delivery of the infants.
