USA's Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs Pull Off Historic Steeplechase Gold, Silver

USA's Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs Pull Off Historic Steeplechase Gold, Silver

Dafne Schippers of The Netherlands justified her billing as the favourite in the women's 200m, successfully defending the title she clinched in Beijing two years ago with another assured display of sprinting.

Coburn finished third in the Olympic final a year ago though was only an outsider for the title here, with the likes of Jepkemoi and Jebet considered the favorites, though in a dramatic race the American stayed calm to set a new Championship record with a time of 9:02.58.

She then turned round and successfully tried again before joining the rest of the pack and gradually eating into a gap that she herself had created.

They were the fourth and fifth medals for the US distance runners at the championships in London, including a bronze from Amy Cragg in the marathon, a bronze from Evan Jager in the men's steeplechase and a silver from Jenny Simpson in the 1,500 meters.

When it came to crunch time, however, the Kenyan-born athlete slowed and was dropped by the leaders. Though, she did fade prior to the final water jump allowing Coburn and fellow American Courtney Frerichs to take gold and silver respectively. She sealed her victory with a surge after the final water barrier. Just her compatriots Celliphine Chespol and Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi were faster this year. "I kept thinking to myself, 'Did this just really happen?"'

Coburn's sister, who unfortunately wasn't able to attend the race, was just as excited, if not more, as you can see in this video. "It is pretty fantastic to get a championship record", she added.

"I was expecting a challenge from when I hit the front". She hugged with Coburn after crossing the line to celetrate the first ever one-two finish in steeplechase for the United States at World Championships. She ran an wonderful race to get the championship record. These marked the first two steeplechase medals for USA women since the event began at the world championships in 2005.

Poland are the surprise occupant of third place having won two medals of each colour so far.
