Hong Kong enhances checks on eggs from Europe

The insecticide can damage the kidneys, the liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities. The countries that have received the eggs are Britain, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Denmark, along with non-EU Switzerland and Hong Kong, BBC reported.

But the World Health Organization said that, when digested in large quantities, the chemical could cause harm to the kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

With concern going global, the commission said it had now called a meeting of ministers and food safety chiefs from affected European Union countries, setting a provisional date of September 26.

He said test results received overnight from the French food safety agency on affected eggs and egg products showed "the level of contamination does not present a risk for the consumer". And a revelation that tainted eggs had also been sent to Hong Kong marks the first time the widening scandal has spread outside Europe.

"The centre has taken preventative measures, including stepping up inspection of imported eggs from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium", she added. Ministers and regulators are gathering on September 26 to discuss ways to prevent similar scandals in the future.

The tested samples showing unsafe levels of Fipronil are sold under the product name Cheer Fresh Dutch Brown Eggs.

The agency said on Thursday the Danish distributor, Danaeg Products, has been ordered to recall the eggs because "the content is illegal", but "not dangerous".

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the HKSAR's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is "very concerned about" the matter and has implemented measures to deal with problematic eggs, Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan told the media.

Contamination has not been confirmed, but they came from farms where contaminated eggs were found.
